Richard started his career in 1997 performing finance-related roles for Fujitsu and SITA, and then moved to British Gas. His first ‘risk role’ was Head of Risk Management & Controls for British Gas Services (an FCA regulated firm) in 2009. He was then promoted to Head of Risk Management & Controls for British Gas in 2012. In parallel he was also appointed to the Board of the captive insurer Centrica Insurance Company Limited. He joined Thames Water in 2014 and later became CFO for their Infrastructure Alliance business/ joint venture. In March 2018, Richard moved into the role of Director of Risk, Internal Audit & Assurance (covering enterprise risk, internal audit, assurance, business integrity and group insurance). In 2022 Richard joined Portakabin Limited in a newly established role as Head of Risk & Internal Audit and then moved to Synthomer PLC in 2024 as Global Head of Compliance, and then taking on a wider remit as Synthomer’s Vice President Risk, Audit and Compliance in 2025. Richard was appointed to be Chair/President of Airmic, the UK risk and insurance association, in September 2025.
